Message from the Music Director

I am honored and privileged to be a part of another season with the Downey Symphony Orchestra. Our 53rd concert series promises to bring our richly cultured community all the thrilling performances and stimulating music it has come to expect and deserve.

We begin our subscription season with some of the world’s most beloved compositions – Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Brahms’ Violin Concerto. The Brahms will be performed by one of the most promising “up and coming stars” of Los Angeles, Ms. Michelle Tseng. For the winter concert, Mr. Francesco Camuglia (winner of the 2009-10 Downey Symphony Young Artist Competition) will show off his profound musicianship with the Mozart Flute Concerto, followed by a performance of the powerfully dramatic Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky.

In keeping with our tradition of championing new music, we will conclude our season featuring a piece written by one of LA’s most gifted new composers, Mr. Eric Guinivan. He has written an exhilarating work for percussion soloist and orchestra, and not only has he composed this piece, but he will be performing the solo percussion part himself!

Please join us for a series of concerts by an ensemble that has been hailed as one of the best metropolitan orchestras in Southern California. I look forward to seeing you at our performances, and I thank you for your ever loyal and continuous support.

Sharon Lavery
